Houston is our nation’s sixth largest city. It is a big, sprawling, diverse place. It’s ethnic neighborhoods are sometimes as big as the Town of Poughkeepsie. So there is no better place to sample local and ethnic food and music.
In Little Saigon, we had spring rolls. In Little Mexico, we had frijoles and enchiladas made by a woman who had to be at least 100 years old. In Little Korea, we went to Ddgga Ddgga, a well-known local karaoke joint.
As for true Southern culture, we went to LaGrange, an hour or so away on the interstate. Once known to have Texas’ largest brothel, it’s now famous for its kolaches, pastry filled with sausage, potatoes and other fillings. Truckers from all over, going in any direction, converge on the Pilot Truck Stop and fill their tanks and stomachs. Lone Star Beer and Kolaches are the food of choice and they wrap the greasy delicacies in newspapers to take on the road.
