According to a news release from the U.S. District Court, 47-year-old Teresa Ann West operated an illegal prostitution business in Nashville and Pigeon Forge for a number of years.
One of the teenagers she employed was a 17-year-old homeless girl, whom she promised to help. Instead, West worked her as a prostitute and introduced her to crack cocaine.
West pleaded guilty in May and was sentenced on Wednesday in federal court in Nashville.
After prison, West will serve ten years of supervised release and will have to register as a sex offender and participate in treatment.

SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. (AP) — A former Tennessee state trooper has been convicted of delivering drugs to a woman at a motel.
Cesar Maldonado was found guilty Wednesday following a two-day jury trial in Robertson County Criminal Court.
The conviction stems from an investigation initiated in July 2010 following allegations of Maldonado’s relationship with a prostitute and their use of drugs.
He will be sentenced Aug. 26 and faces eight to 12 years in prison.

Hawo Osman Ahmed, Ifrah Abdi Yassin and Hamdi Ahmed Mohamud appeared at a detention hearing Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis on charges that they had threatened and assaulted a witness identified in an affidavit only as “MA.”
Ahmed was ordered held and will be transferred to Nashville to face charges there. A U.S. magistrate judge ordered that Yassin and Mohamud each be released to a halfway house while their cases are pending.
The charges against the women bring the number of people charged in connection with the alleged sex-trafficking ring to 33. In November, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee announced indictments against 29 people, mostly from the Twin Cities, for allegedly running an interstate human trafficking ring that sold Somali girls — one as young as 12 — into prostitution. A 30th suspect was indicted last month.

The vehicle used in the first two attacks was recovered on May 6, 2010 at Alloway Street and 8th Avenue South with blood throughout the vehicle.
Swabs of the blood were analyzed by the TBI Crime Lab, and a DNA match was made to Donaldson. His DNA had been entered into the database due to his criminal history, which includes a 2003 conviction for aggravated assault, for which he received a six-year sentence.
Police interviewed Donaldson and he told them they had the wrong DNA. Police then got a search warrant for photos of Donaldson’s body, and found that he had a large stab wound scar on his back where one of the victims said she had stabbed him when she managed to get the knife away from her attacker.
Although the victims have prostitution histories, they told police that they did not make prostitution deals with the suspect.

But I think my analogy best explains it. We have to be very good at what we’re doing. But the big playmakers are the other parts of the system.

But January, February, March and April, there were tremendous reductions in robberies in the 2nd District and throughout the city. In May we had a spike in these robberies. Commander [Darryl] Albert and his team did a tremendous job responding to it, put a lot of extra boots on the ground. And then from May 23 until today there have been two robberies. One involved a prostitution date, and then the one we had Sunday (June 5) on Marengo Street, which is clearly a ’stranger’ robbery.

Last year, 29 people were indicted in a sex trafficking ring in which Somali gangs in Minneapolis and St. Paul allegedly forced girls under age 14 into prostitution in Minnesota, Tennessee and Ohio. Police in Memphis and Nashville have also made recent arrests in child prostitution cases that involved multiple victims.
TBI Director Mark Gwyn said in the report that this first-ever study of sex trafficking in the state shows the problem is more common than previously believed.
“Focused specifically on victims between the ages of nine and seventeen, the study pulled together details that found children are moved from city to city in the state and sold as prostitutes,” he wrote. “Tennessee, simply because of its geographical position to Atlanta and the large number of interstates that cross the state, is conducive to a traveling business.”
