According to local News Channel 5, Rutherford County Republican Representative Joe Carr believes the “sin” tax could help all Tennesseans by tapping the state’s $222 million annual porn business.
“If we can’t outlaw it, and the Supreme Court says we cannot, then what we’ll do is put a 25 percent tax on adult material, hard core pornography,” Carr said.
The lawmaker said it’s not just about the money, but more about the harm porn is doing to local marriages.
Tennessee reportedly has one of the highest divorce rates and Carr hopes his proposal will change that by making porn tougher to buy.
Carr said the new tax could lower or eliminate the sales tax on food.
The tax would also be levied on escort services and cabarets. Carr said the law would affect “Any types of items where you’re required to be 18 years of age, or older to either go into those establishments, or buy those materials.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- A state lawmaker from Rutherford County has proposed a tax that could increase state revenue by $55 million. Representative Joe Carr said taxing adult businesses, and the products they sell, is a way to help all Tennesseans.
Carr claims his proposal is about more than just money. He said his real concern is about saving marriages. He said that Tennessee has one of the highest divorce rates and he’s hoping his proposal will change that.
According to the bill he filed, the adult entertainment industry generates nearly 270-million dollars in Tennessee. A 25 % sales tax would be applied to adult movies, books or admission to any adult entertainment venue. It would also apply to escort services and cabarets. Carr feels this is a tax that will keep giving back to the people of Tennessee.

Councilman Brady Banks and Sumner United for Responsible Government co-founder Matthew Moynihan were caught in a sting on Thursday after responding to an Internet advertisement for an escort service, according to a police account reported in The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/zjh0Tr).
The 33-year-old Banks is the outreach director for Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation and a member of Nashville Emerging Leaders.
Charged with Banks and the 38-year-old Moynihan was 37-year-old Jyotin Arora.
Banks and Arora do not have listed phone numbers, and an email to Banks was not immediately answered. A call to the number listed for Moynihan rang unanswered.
A judicial commissioner set each man’s bond at $1,000.

Police say Tenn. councilman is arrested in sting

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Police say a Nashville metro councilman has been arrested on a charge of patronizing prostitution after being caught in a hotel sting.
    
Metropolitan Nashville Police say in a news release that 33-year-old Metropolitan County Councilman Brady Banks of Brentwood is accused of paying $100 to a female undercover officer for sex.
    
Banks did not immediately respond to phone and email messages requesting comment Thursday night.
    
Police say he was responding to an escort service ad that the police department posted on the Internet.
    
Authorities say he was one of three men arrested during the sting. Police say two other men were arrested earlier in the day.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On Tuesday night, the Metro Councilman caught last week in a prostitution sting made his first public appearance since his arrest.  Brady Banks slipped into the meeting a few minutes late, and left just as quietly as he came.
He’s charged with patronizing prostitution, after Metro Police said they caught him in a sting they set up at the Spring Hills Suites Marriott in Metro Center.
Investigators had placed an ad in the escorts section of backpage.com.  They said Banks answered it and agreed to pay $100 to a young woman in exchange for sex.  Police said he did not know at the time, that woman was an undercover police officer.
When Banks entered council chambers, he arrived just late enough to avoid any pre-meeting questions from the media.  He was greeted first with a hug from Councilwoman Megan Barry.
