NASHVILLE, Tenn.- It’s a website linked to prostitution, sex trafficking and murder. Tennessee Attorney General Bob Cooper says he’s going after the people behind it.
Cooper joined with 45 other states demanding Back-Page remove its “adult services” section. Authorities say especially heinous crimes originated there, including the October 2009 murder of Jiro Kanazawa, who was killed when answering a bogus ad.
Last September, police arrested Tyree Walker for advertising sexual services with two 17-year old girls, and just three days ago, Prontiss Houseworth was arrested for allegedly using violence to force four young women to work as prostitutes which he advertised through the site.
“There has been human trafficking and there is a problem in the state and this is just another step hopefully in the right direction to stop human trafficking and prostitution, especially in minors,” said Jeff Hill with the Attorney General’s office.

NCAA is 5 months into Miami investigation

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) – With investigators five months into checking allegations that a Ponzi scheme artist spent freely on University of Miami athletes, the NCAA president said Wednesday that if the claims are confirmed they show the need for “fundamental change” in college sports.
Former Hurricanes booster Nevin Shapiro, now serving 20 years in federal prison, claims he provided players with cash, prostitutes, cars and other gifts from 2002 to 2010. Shapiro told Yahoo Sports that 72 football players and other athletes at Miami received improper benefits from him in the past decade.
“If the assertions are true, the alleged conduct at the University of Miami is an illustration of the need for serious and fundamental change in many critical aspects of college sports,” NCAA president Mark Emmert said in a statement.

… At least six coaches and as many as 10 athletic department employees overall were allegedly aware of Shapiro’s illicit activity, including former basketball coach Frank Haith, now at Missouri. All the coaches named by Shapiro have since left Miami. Haith lashed out at the story in a statement released through Missouri late Tuesday.
“I am more than happy to cooperate with the national office on this issue and look forward to a quick resolution,” Haith said. “The NCAA has instructed me not to comment further at this time in order to protect the integrity of their review, so I appreciate your understanding in this matter. The reports questioning my personal interactions with Mr. Shapiro are not an accurate portrayal of my character.”
-Shapiro said he paid for 39 different players to receive sex from prostitutes. He also claimed to have offered a $5,000 bounty to any player who could knock Florida State quarterback Chris Rix out of a game, provided players access to his multimillion-dollar home and yacht, and even alleges he bought rims for Hester’s sport-utility vehicle.

Police: Man Fired Shots At Undercover Officer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A man has been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer for firing shots at an undercover detective who was part of a prostitution sting operation.
22-year-old Jimmy Lee Head is also charged with unlawful gun possession. Police said a detective noticed a women sitting with Head on the side of the McCann Street at 2nd Avenue South around 10 p.m. Thursday. He attempted to engage her in conversation, and Head became angered. The officer tried to drive away, and that’s when Head allegedly threw a bottle at the detective’s car and fired several shots in the direction of the vehicle.
The detective was not injured, and his vehicle was not hit.
Head was apprehended by nearby officers moments later. They recovered a .22 caliber pistol.

A man pleaded guilty to the sexual battery of a woman this morning in Judge John H. Gasaways court.
Valentin Cornelio Corntreras, 34, was charged with rape.
He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of sexual battery, an E felony and was sentenced to a time served sentence. He had served 296 days in the Montgomery County Jail.
Contreras is an illegal alien, in the country on an expired education visa and working illegally. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement has a hold on him with intentions to deport him, according to his attorney, Charles Bloodworth, assistant public defender.
A woman reported she was in the vicinity of Contreras apartment looking for an individual and began to be harassed in the neighborhood known for drugs and prostitution.
The woman, who was Spanish speaking, saw Contreras and they communicated in Spanish before he invited her inside to have a beer. Several people were inside the home and the woman reported she drank and beer and was then pressured to do cocaine, Bloodworth said.
