In Birmingham, Mendenhall is charged with murder in the slaying of Lucille “Greta” Carter. Carter, a 44-year-old transient was found dead July 1, 2007, on Finley Boulevard. Investigators said she was shot with a .22-caliber weapon and dumped nude next to a trash bin on a service road. She had a plastic bag over her head and duct tape around her neck.
Bond for Mendenhall in Carter’s slaying was set at $1 million. However, Mendenhall remained in custody at the Davidson County Jail in Nashville, where he was charged in the death of 25-year-old Sara Hulbert, who was found fatally shot at an interstate truck stop in Tennessee.
Nashville authorities have said Mendenhall confessed to killing five women, including one in Birmingham identified as Carter. The victims were mainly known prostitutes who had been killed and dumped at or near trucks stops, authorities have said.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Jury selection began Monday for a trial of accused killer Bruce Mendenhall.
The trial isn’t about the truck-stop killings in four states, but is instead about what prosecutors call a murder-for-hire plot.
Mendenhall has been in jail since 2007, when he was arrested for allegedly killing prostitutes in Tennessee and other states.
This trial will attempt to determine whether Mendenhall tried to hire inmates to kill two lead detectives in his case as well as witnesses.

Since the arrest of Bruce D. Mendenhall of Albion, Ill., in July 2007 for the shooting death of a Nashville, Tenn., prostitute, officials have been monitoring closely the suspected serial killer’s mail and jailhouse phone calls.
Mendenhall’s letters to and from his children and other relatives are now part of his growing case file.
Prosecutors in Nashville are trying to use evidence from those calls and letters to show that after Mendenhall was unsuccessful in establishing an alibi, he tried to hire two fellow inmates to kill people scheduled to testify against him in his upcoming murder trial.
